Scotland's Ice Rinks Frozen Out

While, currently, we are very fortunate and still able to curl the situation elsewhere in Scotland is very different.

Scottish Curling are working in partnership with the Scottish Ice Rink Association, to highlight the devastating impact and continued uncertainty around Protection Levels is having on the sport; with revenues expected to be down by 50% for this season alone.

Please click on the link below to read and share this article, as widely as possible, and help save curling in Scotland, this season, and for the future.

Return to the Ice

It was good to be back at the rink on Wednesday and to see so many familiar faces - once the masks came off! The changes are going to take some getting used to but although there’s some frustration, such as playing the perfect weight (despite what Bob says) only to see it fall short because you’ve not got two sweepers, everyone managed admirably.

I’d like to say that I led from the front, and in a way I did, with the clubs first fall of the season when I attempted to sweep my first stone of the night. With all the focus on the risks of Covid it seems I needed to be reminded that ice is slippery...

Good curling, stay safe and see you soon!

Return to Curling Guidelines Remain Unchanged

With restrictions across Scotland now being tightened to mitigate a recent rise in Covid-19 cases, please see the statement below from Scottish Curling’s CEO, Bruce Crawford.

" I’d like to take this opportunity to reassure members, that the First Minister’s latest statement on Covid-19 restrictions makes no changes to our ‘Return to Curling’ guidance.

There is no suggestion that a return to sport has increased the spread of the virus.

Rather, there is huge recognition that playing and enjoying sport has a positive and uplifting effect on our mental health and general wellbeing.

We have been working hard in partnership with officials to make sure every protocol in place at ice rinks will keep participants, staff and volunteers safe.

I visited my local rink yesterday, seeing first-hand the thorough and extensive measures in place, ready for curlers’ return.

Yes, this season will be different; but I urge members to support their local rinks, and the sport we love, and wish all those who choose to curl a safe and enjoyable season. "

Our latest guidance can be found on the Covid-19 section of our website here

Return to Curling Update from Curl Aberdeen

There is a great deal of work being carried to get us back on the ice. With the cancellation of the World Mixed and the uncertainty of when the Scottish Government will allow us to open, the Management Committee have taken the decision to delay the start of our season until 1 November.

This will allow Curl Aberdeen to make sure they have all the proper protocols in place for your return to the ice rink.Tom has been heavily involved with ventilation discussions with SportScotland and the Scottish Ice Rinks Association. This is a complex area but we have the equipment and set up to meet the requirements.

Update 31/3/20

Hi All

I sincerely hope you are all well and continue to be so.

The situation regarding Covid-19 does not show any real signs of abating in the United Kingdom. It has been reported that it will get worse before it gets better. The seriousness of this should now be abundantly clear to the population of this country that adhering to the rules and guidance issued to combat this virus is necessary.

Various timescales are flying around as to when normality will return. Some say 3 months others say 6 months, truth is, nobody knows.

In a nutshell, everything is up in the air regarding planning for 20/21 season until such time as some clarity is seen.Your committee members will keep this under review.

A couple of things to mention in the meantime:-

1) The Spring League and Singles competitions have been considered as null and void.
2) A letter has been sent to Preston Curling Club to assess their interest in a home and away match as part of both clubs 150th Anniversary celebrations in 2021.

Please, Please, Please take care of yourselves and your nearest and dearest during this difficult time.

On behalf of your committee.

President

Coronavirus Announcement

16th March 2020

Coronavirus Announcement

Here at Curl Aberdeen, the health and safety of our members, guests and staff is our highest priority. We, as a community, must do our part in mitigating risk to others in and around our Club. The Management Committee along with myself have decided to close the Club as of this morning, Monday 16th March 2020, for the remainder of the curling season.

This decision was made by consensus with many factors taken into consideration. Curl Aberdeen has a wide-ranging membership demographic, from all walks of life, and staff that allow us to operate daily. We also provide a venue for an even wider demographic of guests for events and room hires. Given the breadth of uncontrollable factors, and rapidly evolving situation, we believe it is our responsibility and best for all involved if we take this step to protect everyone, as much as possible.

We have also taken the decision to postpone the Club AGM on, 30th April 2020. A new date will be sent out once we have a date confirmed.

Updates will be sent out in the next few weeks with our plan going forward. These communications will include details about the current unplayed games, the new season, Club AGM and other details.

In the meantime, stay healthy, stay active, and enjoy time with family.

Best regards,

Tom Brewster
Manager
