Season 2011/12 Underway

The new season is well underway with 6 matches already played on good keen ice. I have decided not to post the league table until all teams have played at least 2 games.

Meantime I welcome any feedback from members following matches played on lanes C & D with regard to the new experimental buffer which has been installed between the lanes.

If successful it is likely the remaining lanes will receive similar treatment in due course.

Curling Clubhouse at West Cults

Further to my article with photographs of our pond and clubhouse, by coincidence, I have now come across a 5'x4' impressive oil on canvas painting of the clubhouse depicted in it's present delapidated state painted by local artist Jaki Sinclair.

To view Jaki's painting click here then scroll to the bottom of the page.

Curling Pond at West Cults

Aberdeen CC used to have a large curling pond and club house at West Cults. The AGM minute books record that it was decided to abandon outdoor curling in October 1967 probably due to the milder winters and the availibility of indoor ice at Donalds Ice Rink at Spring Garden. In 1998 the club sold the remaining land and the majority of the proceeds were gifted to the Curling Project to assist in the building of the new curling rink at Lang Stracht.

Recently I was shown the above photograph of lots of people enjoying the pond on a busy winter's day in 1933. Having a keen interest in outdoor curling and local history I decided to visit the site to see what remains of the pond today. The story can be found here.

Top Ten Challenge

It’s that time of year again, the Top Ten Challenge at Forfar. This year’s event will be held on Sunday 27 March and is a full day of activity.

Depending on the number of teams entered there will be a mini round robin stage where each match will consist of a number of ends play in rink, triples, & pairs format to amass as many shots scored as possible. The final discipline of the day is the “hotshots” where many points can be added, or if last year is anything to go by, lost from your brought forward score.

The cost for the day will be £165 per team. I think food is included but I will check.

In the first instance I will be inviting those who participated last year to play but I'm sure more players will be required. I need 9 players to make it worth our while submitting an entry because penalty shots are applied for teams playing with less.

If you're interested let me know ASAP.

Curling outdoors in Aberdeen !!

My girls and I enjoyed the experience of being able to curl outdoors on the Duthie Park boating pond, adjacent to Riverside Drive, in near perfect conditions last Wednesday afternoon.

.

Usually this pond is full of debris when it is frozen but if similar conditions arise I'll mark some circles and try and get some others along with their stones.
